I Think I Could Do This…

Posted in Who We Are, Coupon Codes, Hardware, Home Improvement, Bathroom Fixtures, Kitchen at 8:43 pm by Deb Savvy

With the weather so terrible and the economy even worse and the holidays all falling in the middle of the week, most of us find ourselves spending more time than usual at home. At times like this, a great way to keep busy is to catch up on all those little nagging unfinished projects around the house. I’ve already attacked the closets. I’m working on some new storage shelves in the basement and up next…. I’m going to re-do my kitchen back splash.

I’ve long been a fan of those small multi-colored glass tiles. Beck has a glass-tile backsplash in her kitchen and it’s gorgeous! I’ve been doing some research and as it turns out - those little tiles come in sheets that are really easy to install. Ditto for river rock and other small polished stone tiles.

I actually think I could do this myself. And I’m going to try.

Not only will it be a great creative outlet for me, I’ll be improving my kitchen (and my home) and I’ll pay only a small fraction of what it would cost for a professional to come and do the job for me.

If it works out well, I intend to do a tile treatment on the wall of one of my bathrooms, too.

I’ll keep you posted.

I Admit It…

Posted in Who We Are, Gifts under $30, Hard to Find Items, Cocktails, Valentines for Him, Father's Day at 5:37 am by Deb Savvy

It’s not that I’m such a serious drinker. The truth is that I actually don’t drink that much. Despite this fact, I must admit that I really do want a small flask of my very own.

Nothing fancy. Nothing big. Something small and simple but with a little bit of style. Something exactly like this Round Celtic Flask. At 5 ounces it’s the perfect size.

I found it amongst the hundreds of flasks over at FlaskShop.com.

A bargain for only $27.50 - at this price there’s no reason not to indulge my flask desire. Many other styles and designs are available in the same price range, making a flask a wonderful and affordable gift option.  An especially popular gift with the guys - but like I said, I really want one for myself.

In 2009 I Intend To…

I wouldn’t qualify this as a New Year’s Resolution. It’s just something I’ve always wanted to do and I’m finally going to do it.

In 2009 I intend to learn belly dance. No, I’m not going to go to a belly dancing school. I’m going to check it out in the privacy of my own home. On DVD.

They’ve got a great selection of Belly Dance Instruction Video at 24arabia.com Arabic Online Shop, along with CD’s, supplies apparel and more.

One More Way to Make the Holidays Easier

Posted in Who We Are, Shopping Tips, Entertaining, Great Ideas, Housekeeping, Groceries at 2:17 am by Deb Savvy

Start laying in your supplies early. Between the holidays falling mid-week and the terrible weather just about everywhere - don’t go out for your groceries and other household essentials - have them brought to you.

Buy One Get One Free on select groceries

Depending on where you live, you probably have a variety of choices for delivery. Check it out - if you’re a home grocery delivery novice, you can even usually save some money on your first order.

And if you’ve experienced the wonder of grocery delivery services before, then you know first hand how wonderful it is to have everything delivered right to your kitchen counter! Grocery delivery is an especially good idea for anything big, bulky and heavy. From soda and mixers to cleaning supplies and laundry detergent - you don’t even need to bring it in from the car. You don’t need to do a thing.

Peapod

To be honest, I was dubious in the beginning and tended to order only pre-packaged food items. I live in a Peapod service area and I’ve got to tell you that once I tried ordering produce and other fresh items, I was hooked. I’m picky and even the tomotoes and peaches were just as good if not better than those I would have selected myself. I’ve even ordered fresh meat and fish and been happy every single time.

shop at home. we deliver. safeway.com

So stay home, log on, pick your delivery time and load up your shopping cart. I like to schedule an early morning delivery, around the time I’m about to pour my second cup of coffee. That way - by the time I’ve finished my second cup, everything is put away and what would have been a two-hour marathon trip to the supermarket is already off my list for the day!

Love that!

Dazzled and Delighted by Dell

Posted in Who We Are, Home Office, Computers, Tech Stuff at 7:22 pm by Deb Savvy

Sad but true fact:  These days we rarely get to enjoy a truly positive customer service experience when it comes to computer hardware.  Well, today I am here to share an exception to that rule.  Last week I started having some trouble with my Dell laptop.  My screen would start blinking out of the blue.  The touch pad would seem out of touch.  Then it started to freeze and require frequent rebooting.  By Thursday the thing totally went crazy and it became clear that I was in need of some serious customer service.

Well, let me tell you - after a totally reasonable wait of less than 5 minutes, I was connected to a totally helpful Dell™ Home service rep located in Salt Lake City, Utah.  We were on the phone for quite a while as he instructed my on how to run various diagnostic tests and I reported results back to him.  By late afternoon the verdict was in - I needed a new hard drive, mother board and video card!   I wasn’t as frantic as I have been in the past when a computer starts to get all wiggy - after the last time, I’m much better prepared for a tragedy.  I’ve got online data backups and external hard-drive data backups  (live and learn!) plus the laptop in question is not even a year old so I knew that whatever was wrong with it was covered under the warranty.   The one thing that did have me worried was that I knew that I was leaving town on Saturday morning and there just wasn’t much time.   And what happened?  Before I even had a chance to explain my schedule needs, the plan was underway.  The exact parts were being dispatched by overnight courrier to a technician in my area.  The technician was supposed to call me after the parts were received and not later than noon and then COME TO MY HOUSE and perform the repair not later than 2 PM.  And get this - that is exactly what happened.  By 2 in the afternoon, my new best friend Cary the Dell™ Home Tech had replaced all the faulty components and reassembled my laptop to better than new condition.  It’s running better than it did when it was brand new!

Don’t get me wrong, a computer crash is never fun.  At its best, computer crash .  But Dell™ Home made it as pain free is it could possibly have been. The only bummer was that I did have to restore a bunch of my programs and my data -  an annoyance but hardly a tragedy.  They TOTALLY took care of me and FAST.

Thought you’d want to know.

But as they say, every cloud has a silver lining. The good news is that if you do need to buy just about anything, this is a terrific time to shop. Pocky Talk

Posted in Who We Are, Chocolate, International Foods, Hard to Find Items, Candies, Snacks at 4:59 am by Deb Savvy

I’m not sure why I like Pocky so much. Maybe it’s because I actually lived in Japan as a little kid back in the 60’s when Pocky was first introduced. Maybe I saw an ad and was mesmerised as a three year old and hypnotised into loving Pocky. Who knows? Maybe I just tried it back then, loved it and have been addicted ever since!

It was actually called Chocoteck back then. The name was changed after a couple of years to Pocky - to honor the crunchy munchy sounds they make when eaten. It’s funny - sometimes I see Pocky everywhere I go - at Walgreens, 7-Eleven even the corner store. Never the new or more exotic flavors, of course. But enough to satisfy a serious Pocky craving.

Asian Food Grocer Snack Pack

And other times it’s just nowhere - except AsianFoodGrocer.com. In ALL possible flavors. Even new flavors that can be really hard to find here in the States. And you can even buy large boxes of single Pocky packs - perfect for munching and crunching with a cup of coffee. I’ve been known to carry them in my purse - just in case I have a Pocky emergency.

Can’t Hit The Road Without My…

Posted in Who We Are, Womenswear, Activewear, Travel, Clothing at 5:42 pm by Deb Savvy

I just spent the better part of 4 weeks on the road. Well, technically most of my travel was by air - but you know what I mean. I lived out of suitcases, packed, unpacked and repacked multiple times and spent quite a few long hours in airports. Savvy packing was essential. With all that moving around I needed to keep my baggage as managable as possible plus I needed to conserve as much space as possible for new acquisitions. And, of course, I wanted to look good wherever I went yet still be as comfortable as possible on long travel days. My solution - a Juicy sweat suit, of course.

No matter how lightly I pack, I simply can leave home without my Juicy essentials. A bit more stylish than your typical sweats. I may want to feel totally comfortable and schlumpy, but I certainly don’t want to look it! Dare I say chic? Easily accessorized up or down and doubles as workout wear should I be so inclined during my travels. I generally opt for a neutral color like black or brown, so I can use the Juicy jacket as an extra layer with the rest of my travel wardrobe. When traveling to a tropical destination I sometimes opt for white or cream, although a slightly darker color is better for me since I generally drip coffee on myself whenever I wear something white. Bright colors and jewel tones can be a great choice too.

Shopping that Promotes Peace

Posted in Who We Are, Shopping Tips, Tabletop, Hostess Gifts, Judaica, International Shopping, Giving Back, Gifts under $25 at 11:27 pm by Deb Savvy

Last week I did some grocery shopping at a small international fruit market / grocery not too far from my house. I saw some pickles that looked interesting. I took them off the shelf to take a closer look. The front label was in English; the back label was in Arabic. On the English side, the package was clearly marked ‘Made in West Bank’. Just as I was thinking about how cool it was that in such a short time there are actually marketable products coming to America from West Bank and wondering why they don’t talk about that on the news - I noticed it. A Kosher certification. (OU). Now I really want to know why no one is talking about this on the news. I’m not going to pontificate about politics - I’m just going to say that I believe in peace and I think it’s AWESOME that there are products coming out of West Bank onto the American market and that I think it’s even more incredible that some of these products are Kosher foods.

So it got me thinking. What better way to promote peace than to go out your way to purchase products made by people who live in regions of conflict. Especially the artists and craftsmen who are dedicated to promoting peace, diversity and respect for the traditions of all people and cultures through the products they create.

I’m also happy to report that it seems like they’ve recently reduced their prices. My skirts were a STEAL at $128 for the pair. I’ll be counting the days until they arrive. If you’ve never tried their skirts before, I urge to to give them a test run. You would never expect such quality and exquisite workmanship, particularly for these prices. And because they are all totally original designs, you won’t see yourself coming and going on every corner. Love that. A wardrobe refreshing fashion statement for a song.
