Two words: LAST MINUTE. Two more words: OFF SEASON.

Combine all four of those words: BIG BARGAINS.
If you’re flexible about departure dates and ports of call, the best bargains can easily be yours, especially if you’re looking for a last minute get away. Once that ship has left the port, any unsold rooms remain vacant for the entire voyage. The closer you get to the sailing date, the better the deals.

If you’re longing for a little last minuted dream getaway, always consider cruising among your best options. Once the ship has sailed, any vacant cabins are vacant for the duration, so the closer you are to the sailing date the luckier you might be when it comes to pricing. Particularly if you’re a bit flexible as to exact ports of call. There are cruises departing every day from New York, Fort Lauderdale and other convenient ports in the US, not to mention exotic locations world wide.

The same goes for upgrading your cabin if you’ve already booked a cruise. Always check back as the sailing date approaches. The price differential can decrease based on availability.

With all the traveling I’ve been doing, I’ve passed a fair number of hours in airport duty free shops. There was a time when a few hours at Heathrow or Charles de Gaulle meant a chance for some serious shopping, but not these days. With the EURO well above $1.50 it’s no surprise that there are no bargains to be found. But, to be honest, I was shocked at how high the prices actually were. I found one of my favorite fragrances, Terre d’Hermes, at several different duty free shops for anywhere from 57 to 66 Euro (the equivalent of about $85 to $105). While this price is certainly a bit less than the full retail price of $125, it’s far more than I’d ever pay online.

The same was true for just about every fragrance I shopped and most skincare and beauty products, too.

And when it came to cosmetics, the results were even worse. Some Chanel lipsticks were actually MORE expensive in at the Paris duty free than they are full price at any high end department store in the states.

I checked prices for nearly every product I purchase regularly (and for which I know the prices well). From lipstick to eye cream to perfume, I knew that I could save at least 20% and sometimes as much as 50% shopping online as opposed to duty free. In a way, it’s a shame. I always loved spending my last few hours in Paris shopping away. And they have such nice shops in the airport now. Oh well. Until the dollar strengthens against the Euro, I’m sorry to report that duty free bargain shopping for perfume and cosmetics has pretty much bitten the dust.

I just spent the better part of 4 weeks on the road. Well, technically most of my travel was by air – but you know what I mean. I lived out of suitcases, packed, unpacked and repacked multiple times and spent quite a few long hours in airports. Savvy packing was essential. With all that moving around I needed to keep my baggage as managable as possible plus I needed to conserve as much space as possible for new acquisitions. And, of course, I wanted to look good wherever I went yet still be as comfortable as possible on long travel days. My solution – a Juicy sweat suit, of course.

No matter how lightly I pack, I simply can leave home without my Juicy essentials. A bit more stylish than your typical sweats. I may want to feel totally comfortable and schlumpy, but I certainly don’t want to look it! Dare I say chic? Easily accessorized up or down and doubles as workout wear should I be so inclined during my travels. I generally opt for a neutral color like black or brown, so I can use the Juicy jacket as an extra layer with the rest of my travel wardrobe. When traveling to a tropical destination I sometimes opt for white or cream, although a slightly darker color is better for me since I generally drip coffee on myself whenever I wear something white. Bright colors and jewel tones can be a great choice too.

UPDATE AS OF 6/1/2008: we’ve got the inside scoop on how to get the best possible deal every single day.
- Enter coupon code FirstOrder at checkout and save $25 on your first order of $150 or more at Fashion Chateau
.
- Enter coupon code Fashion15 to save 15% off you order at Fashion Chateau
.
- Both of these coupon codes are ongoing offers and should continue to work for the foreseeable future. When surfing the site, click on the ‘why shop’ tab – that’s where they post special short term promotions and coupon codes that aren’t listed on the landing page.

It’s been a whirlwind of travel the last few weeks. I’ve logged about 25,000 air miles. Been in six different countries and on four different continents. I’ve braved every kind of weather imaginable – moving from layers of cashmere sweaters, gloves and umbrellas to thin cottons literally overnight. It was a blast, but it wasn’t easy. I’m pooped. The surprising thing (to me, anyway) is that I really don’t look it. You’d think that after all the drastic weather changes and endless hours in the air, that I’d be chronically dehydrated and that my skin would look terrible – but it doesn’t. I look pretty good, even if I must say so myself. I planned well for this trip, particularly with respect to skincare. I drank as much water as possible, of course. That’s important always, but especially when air travel is involved. I was well prepared when it came to skincare products, as well. In what can only be described as a stroke of true genius, I actually brought very few of the products I use as part of my daily regime at home. I opted for instead for richer, more intense products. I used a fabulous reguvenating nightcream during the day, under a slightly tinted moisturizer with an SPF of 30. I used a two pronged approach to eye cream, too. One for rich moisture and the other – serious baggage handler, of course.

I kicked it up a notch when it came to cleansing, too. The more oxygenation the better, I always say.

I’m about to skip town, myself. While my trip is a bit more of an odyssey than the typical spring break, Miami is one of my destinations. Like most people, I prefer to stay in really nice hotels – and like most people, I like to pay as little as possible. I was a bit worried that prices would be over the top… As usual, I turned to the folks at Hotels.com
and my worries were laid to rest in a matter of clicks. I snagged a tres swanky 5 star hotel for UNDER $225 a night. In Miami. During spring break. I rock. And so does Hotels.com
.

I prefer Hotels.com
to the other hotel and travel websites for a variety of reasons – the search engine is far superior to any other site I’ve used and much more user friendly. It’s easier to find top tier hotels and smaller boutique hotels. There are tons of photos, ratings and extremely detailed descriptions of amenities. The prices are excellent, as is the customer service. And best of all, you can save even more when you book a multiple night stay.
Here’s how it works – the longer you stay, the more you save. Save $20 with a 3 night booking. Save $30 with a 5 night booking. Save $50 with an 8 night booking. Save $75 with a 10 night booking. And max out those savings with a $100 rebate for a 12 night booking!

Bon voyage!

It might be easier than you think to make that dream a reality. Especially if you’re interested in taking a cruise. Yes, a luxury cruise can be really expensive. But not always. Sometimes last minute shopping can really pay off. The closer it gets to the sailing date, the deeper the discounts.
Next time you’re dreaming of the sun and the sea…. Make yourself a cup of coffee, take a few minutes and do a bit of price checking. You might be surprised with how affordable a luxury cruise can be for a last minute getaway.
