Wondering who was recently rated the best overall value for flowers by the Wall Street Journal. You won’t be surprised. I wasn’t.

It was ProFlowers.com
. Like I said, no big surprise. They deliver fresh, fresh, fresh flowers for some of the best prices around. I’m a big fan of their bulk bouquets, but I must admit that their arrangements and potted plants are pretty spectacular, too.

Looking for an alternative to sending flowers or a blooming plant? How about the gift of bonsai?

Nothing beats the zen simplicity and elegance of a bonsai tree. Not only is it a gift that’s sure to last for years (many bonsai trees are decades old by the time we buy them) - it’s a gift that could very well grow into a hobby or a zen obsession.
A great option for just about any gifting occasion.

It’s quickly becoming prime gardening season here in Chicago and all over the country. Already a few of my braver neighbors have planted their annuals and filled their window boxes. I’m not as confident that we won’t have one more cold blast before blooming weather is here to stay. That’s a bit of a lie - the truth is that I just haven’t been organized enough to get it done. It’s a big job - going to the garden center, trying to create a design for my window boxes from whatever they have available and then running home to get the planting done ASAP. It’s an event. I’ve found a way to get those container gardens rolling with a bit less effort - at Windowbox.com
.

It’s a one stop shopping source for things related to container gardening. Windowbox.com
offers a vast collection of gardening containers, custom windowboxes and supplies. They also provide all kinds of useful information, advice, and everything you need to experience the joys of growing plants in containers. They call what they do ‘horticultural therapy’. They’re committed to the idea that bringing people and plants together makes the world a better place.

Some of the most beautiful gifts I have ever received were from The Red Envelope. Always elegant. Always impeccably presented. Plants from The Red Envelope are no exception. They’ve got quite a selection, including herb gardens (starting under $30), mini-roses (under $40), paperwhite narcissus (under $35), unbelievably beautiful shooting star hydrangeas ($50) and many others. All are plants of superior quality; all are beautifully planted in an elegant container selected to specifically complement the plant itself.
For more serious gifting, they even have a plant of the month club. Gift memberships of three months ($140), six months ($250) or a full year ($450) are available. Check it out. These are not the same plants you’ll find anywhere else.

While cut flowers are lovely (and don’t add to your clutter) they lack a certain permanence that certain gifting occasions require. I think a Bonsai tree is a terrific alternative. I love the whole feng shui aesthetic, the trees are nice and small (also no added clutter) and actually require relatively little maintenance.
Check out this great website. They are the largest supplier of Bonsai Trees and supplies on the internet offering hunderds of items at low wholesale prices.

Here’s a delightful alternative to a floral arrangement or potted plant, particularly if you know the recipient has a ‘black thumb’. How about a fresh live preserved topiary? It stays green and perfect forever. No watering required.
A topiary can bring a splash of color to any room. I have tons of plants in my house but in certain spots nothing will flourish. And nothing looks worse than a dying plant. No more. A fresh preserved live topairy lives on forever.
