It’s cold outside and the days are shorter and it’s more important now than any time of year to bring the sunshine and brightness of summer into the house. And what better way to do that than with plants and flowers?

This is a great time of year to send flowers and plants. As a hostess gift. A thank you gift. A housewarming gift. Or just because. It’s like sending someone a little dose of much needed sunshine.

And if you happen to be a last minute shopper, keep Flowers Across America

How many times have you lamented over an open, unfinished bottle of wine? Okay, maybe not that many since we all probably would just step up to the plate and finish the bottle. How about this one – how many times have you not had a glass of wine because you didn’t want to open a bottle and let it go to waste. Problem solved with this nifty little gadget. Now you can preserve wine for as long as two weeks!

The Pek Preservino
kit even comes with two stoppers so you can preserve two bottles at the same time!
$39.95 at MetroKitchen.com
A practical item to buy for yourself, it’s also a wonderful gift idea. Makes a great hostess gift. Good for a wine lover for just about any occasion.

My cousin, friend and soul sister Jeannie was in town for a visit not too long ago. We spent a wonderful couple of days holed up at my place drinking coffee, snacking, chatting and hiding from the rest of the world. I was making tuna salad when she commented on my supremely low tech (and older than the hills) hand crank can opener. She was surprised that I didn’t have an electric can opener in my otherwise completely pimped-out kitchen. I was kind of surprised, too. Not only that I didn’t have one. I was also surprised that it had never occurred to me that I might want or need one.

After she left I couldn’t stop thinking about it. Imagine my delight when just a few days later this lovely Cuisinart Can Opener arrived in the mail. A wonderful (and unnecessary) combination thank you and hostess gift. Woo-hoo! I’m a happy girl. She even included an adorable note about how much easier it will be for me to make my excellent tuna salad.
It’s funny how there are certain things we just don’t think of for ourselves. And I think small kitchen electrics like an electric can opener totally fall into that category. Making them excellent gifts for oh-so-many occasions. The ‘top of the line’ stainless steal opener that I received sells for $49.99; other styles and finishes are available starting at under $20. See them all at Chefs Corner.

I was lucky enough to receive some Caribou Coffee
as a hostess gift and I’ve been sampling these divine brews over the last few days. Wow. This is some seriously great coffee.

So far my favorites are the Kenya AA, the La Minita Peaberry and the Roastmaster’s Reserve Brazil Poco Fundo – and I’ve still got a few more left to sample. We used to have Caribou cafes here in Chicago, but it’s been a long time since I’ve seen one. I had forgotten how much I love this coffee.
Coffee is a great idea as a hostess or housewarming gift. Also great as a thank you gift – especially for colleagues and business associates.

Did you know that Vera Wang was designing stationery? I didn’t. It makes sense, though, doesn’t it? Her name is practically synonymous with elegant living.

I found these Vera Wang Bejeweled Sun Notecards
over at Exposures Online
. And it’s just one of a nice selection of beautiful designer stationery and note cards they offer from Vera Wang and other top designers. The set of 10 cards sells for $32. Loads of other colors and styles are available.

Vera Wang Eyelet Spiral Notecards (Set of 10)
Gifting Hint: Stationery and fine paper goods are always a great gifting option. First of all – they are at once elegant and affordable, a combo which can be pretty hard to achieve. Second, stationery is ‘consumable’ meaning there’s no added clutter. Stationery is practical, which is always a good thing. And, most of all, I think beautiful stationery is always a great gift for a wedding, engagement or housewarming gift. These events mark a time of new beginnings always come along with gifts for which thank you notes will, of course, need to be written.

Last week I did some grocery shopping at a small international fruit market / grocery not too far from my house. I saw some pickles that looked interesting. I took them off the shelf to take a closer look. The front label was in English; the back label was in Arabic. On the English side, the package was clearly marked ‘Made in West Bank’. Just as I was thinking about how cool it was that in such a short time there are actually marketable products coming to America from West Bank and wondering why they don’t talk about that on the news – I noticed it. A Kosher certification. (OU). Now I really want to know why no one is talking about this on the news. I’m not going to pontificate about politics – I’m just going to say that I believe in peace and I think it’s AWESOME that there are products coming out of West Bank onto the American market and that I think it’s even more incredible that some of these products are Kosher foods.

So it got me thinking. What better way to promote peace than to go out your way to purchase products made by people who live in regions of conflict. Especially the artists and craftsmen who are dedicated to promoting peace, diversity and respect for the traditions of all people and cultures through the products they create.

After a hiatus of what I think is more than 10 years, Sara is FINALLY bringing back her chili party. Woo Hoo! The infamous annual fete is a combination of a gourmet chili feast (as Sara is, among other things, a top notch chef) and a chile pepper themed drunken melee, with crazy themed decor, prize raffles and more. I had heard rumblings that she was resurrecting the tradition. The minute the invitation arrived I had a brainstorm. I’m going to send her a chile pepper pinata for the party. How perfect is that! My next thought was ‘where in the world will I find a chile pepper pinata?’.
Red Chile Pinata
Well I found one. At Pinatas.com
– and best of all it was only $12.99! How often do you get to surprise someone with such a perfect little something for a party and get such a bargain at the same time? You might think it’s strange that I’m bragging about how I sent my friend such an inexpensive gift. It’s not strange at all. No one loves a bargain more than Sara. And she likes to know. Sara has been known to leave the price tag on a gift on purpose. Not because she wants you to now how much she spent – but because she wants you to KNOW how great a bargain she found. She’s a savvy shopper, what can I say.
