With winter in full swing, we’ve all got the windows closed up tight. Maybe even some storm windows and weather proofing to keep things sealed against the cold air. The problem is – without those leaks there’s no fresh air. Whatever’s in the air is just going to stay there. For months. Dust, allergens and who knows what else can just circulate through the house and stay there – until spring. Uck! And we’ll just keep breathing it in and out. And that’s not the only problem. Indoor winter air can be so dry – and drying. Lack of proper humidity can cause all knds of winter discomforts including dry and itchy skin, sinus problems including bloody noses, difficulty sleeping and even chapped lips.
Now’s a good time to think about getting an air purifier, filter and/or humidifier. Improving your home indoor air quality can only help you enjoy a healthier and more comfortable 2008.

The days are getting shorter and shorter. We had a one week reprieve, but this weekend we turn the clocks back and lose even more of the afternoon. The short days can have a profound impact on mood and energy.
That’s why it’s especially important to pay particularly close attention to nutrition this time year.
It’s easy to inadvertently find yourself eating fewer fresh fruits and veggies without the bounty of summer produce. It’s also easy to find yourself eating more prepared foods, snacks and refined sugars. And the next thing you know you’ve got even less energy. You skip a few visits to the gym and BOOM! You are in a full blown winter slump! Been there! Done that! Skip it this year – give yourself a boost. Make an effort to eat just a teeny bit better (because every little bit helps). Stick with your exercise routine and consider kicking it up a notch. Go out of your way to eat fresh seasonal fruits and vegetables. And don’t forget to take your vitamins!
It can only help, right? A little more energy goes a long way!

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month and once again Fannie May is joining the fight for a cure. They will donate 10% of proceeds when an item from their limited edition Pink Collection is purchased. The Fannie May Pink Collection includes meltaways, pixies and lots of old time favorites.
Funds will be donated to the Cancer Wellness Center, Jennifer S. Fallick Cancer Support Center, Wellness House, Wellness Place and Gilda’s Club Chicago. These charitable organizations provide free support and education to those affected by cancer. Last year, Fannie May, with the help of a matching grant from The Coleman Foundation, was able to donate $85,000. Help them to exceed that donation this year, and meet their goal in raising $100,000 for this important cause. The Pink Collection is available until 10/31/2007.

As the weather is cooling and we start to open the windows, we let in all kinds of small particles. Once we close the windows for winter, those particles stay behind in the air we breathe and can trigger allergies or, even worse, illness.
The best solution – clean air. That’s how you know your home is exactly as clean as it looks. Don’t forget to have your heating system cleaned and serviced. It’s also a really good idea to have your ductwork cleaned every couple of years. You can even add an allergen trapping filter to your furnace or opt for a complete air filtering unit.
