Last night I cooked dinner for some friends. It sounds like a selfless act but I had an ulterior motive. Their baby, Dude, is now 6 weeks old and I wanted to come over and see the bath-time show! Anyway, I talked my way in with a delicious meal of maple/soy marinated salmon and rice noodles with bok choy and peapods. (Beware of natives bearing gifts, yes?)

Anyway, the salmon is something I’ve made a bunch of times before, but I stressed over it yesterday, not really remembering how much soy sauce relative to how much maple syrup. And then I had a flash thought that maybe I had actually used teriyaki or tamari and not soy sauce at all. It turned out great and we had a wonderful meal and Dude put on a terrific show. Then I nearly fell off my chair in laughter when I got an e-mail this morning that the Barefoot Contessa Pantry
maple teriaki sauce was a featured product this month at StonewallKitchen.com
. I don’t think I’ll ever worry about making my own marinade again – not when it comes in one simple package. It’s easier and it’s actually less expensive given the current price of a really good bottle of maple syrup.

We used to have a couple of lovely caviar shops here in Chicago and slowly they’ve disappeared. We also had a Petrossian over at Bloomies for quite a long time – but it’s now a shadow of it’s former self. I’ve gone virtual with my caviar shopping over the last couple of years. And believe it or not, caviar is actually an excellent thing to shop for on-line. Especially with the fabulous choices available – like an incredible range of Russian, Iranian, American, & Specialty Caviar from GourmetFoodStore.com

Expect to find a larger selection of products from a wider array of places than you’d typically find at any single bricks and mortar caviar boutique. And prices that are at worst competitive and at best and often represent significant savings. I personally suspect that they do a much larger volume than any of my now defunct neighborhood options, because the freshness is pretty incredible.

My recent globetrotting was not just about shopping. I spent a fair amount of time working on a project related to my ‘day job’. And it was a good thing, too. Everything was SO expensive. With the EURO reaching an all time high against the dollar, it was just way too expensive to do that much extremely high end shopping. Truth be told, a Louis Vuitton purse or Hermes scarf is now more expensive in Paris than it is in New York. When I lived in Paris the Euro was at an all time low of about 85 cents. Now it’s nearly $1.60 – that means that prices have just about DOUBLED! But I had plenty of time to eat. And I indulged myself in some incredible tasty treats. Including chocolate. Lots of chocolate.

During my 5 day stop in Paris I sampled chocolates at boutique chocolatiers on the Ile Saint Louis and in the Marais. I nibbled tasty treats from big name artisan chocolatiers, too. And (drumroll, please…..) my pick for the best chocolates in Paris….. RICHART Gourmet French Chocolate.

RICHART is dedicated to producing fine chocolates for chocolate lovers around the world. This devotion to creating fine chocolate and the art of the chocolatier is unmatched by other chocolate companies. RICHART Gourmet French Chocolate
collections combine the finest chocolate and best ingredients the world has to offer in beautifully presented specialty boxes (ballotins). Trust me. You’ll love it!
Give the people close to you the gift of art topped with an free edible chocolate card of you choice

There’s just something about a caramel apple. Depending on where you live you might call it a taffy apple or a candy apple. There might be disagreement about the name – but there’s no disagreement about the taste. And if you’re looking for the ultimate interpretation of that classic treat, look no further than Mrs. Prindables Gourmet Caramel Apples.
