I Can’t Believe I Didn’t Have One

My cousin, friend and soul sister Jeannie was in town for a visit not too long ago. We spent a wonderful couple of days holed up at my place drinking coffee, snacking, chatting and hiding from the rest of the world. I was making tuna salad when she commented on my supremely low tech (and older than the hills) hand crank can opener. She was surprised that I didn’t have an electric can opener in my otherwise completely pimped-out kitchen. I was kind of surprised, too. Not only that I didn’t have one. I was also surprised that it had never occurred to me that I might want or need one.

After she left I couldn’t stop thinking about it. Imagine my delight when just a few days later this lovely Cuisinart Can Opener arrived in the mail. A wonderful (and unnecessary) combination thank you and hostess gift. Woo-hoo! I’m a happy girl. She even included an adorable note about how much easier it will be for me to make my excellent tuna salad.

It’s funny how there are certain things we just don’t think of for ourselves. And I think small kitchen electrics like an electric can opener totally fall into that category. Okay, I admit it. I’m a bit of a diva princess. I like fresh, crisp bed linens like in a hotel. And I like a nice pressed seam down the front of my jeans, too. Like I said – diva princess. I used to send all those things out to be professionally laundered, starched and pressed. I found it terribly expensive and over time it became clear that my clothes and linens were being subjected to some serious rough treatment. So I started doing it myself. And frankly, I’m tired of it. It takes way too long and while I used to find it relaxing I now find myself avoiding it at all costs. What am I going to do? Well, I’m certainly not going to return to spending over $100 a month to have it done for me. I’m going to bite the bullet and buy myself a serious steam press. I figure I’ll save myself several hours a week minimum.

I’m passionate about my coffee, as so many of us are. I recently received one of these little battery operated frothers as a gift from Paula and I absolutely ADORE it. Unlike the steamer attachment to my single brewer, the frother adds no water to the milk and I can make thick, creamy delicious marshallow like foam. For an extra decadent coffee experience, I’ll froth up some warm half and half. YUM! The best thing is that a frother is wonderfully inexpensive. I found this one at the Chef’s Corner for $11. I Am Woman, Hear Me Roar

Last summer when I was staying with Becky, Peanut, Ketchy and Duncan, the refrigerator started leaking. We narrowed the problem area down to a small plastic tube in the automatic icemaker. We turned the icemaker off and called the Maytag man. Two weeks and three service calls later we were no closer to making ice without a flood. Despite numerous calls to the service and parts departments and the confirmation from all three technicians that the problem was, indeed, the tubing we suspected, we just could not seem to get a technician to show up with the tubing to actually complete the fix. Completely frustrated we did what we always do - we sat down at the computer. We ordered a new tube and installed it ourselves.
