After a much too brief vacation in France, I’m craving all things haut. While I must concede that the French reign supreme on most culinary delights, there is chocolatier right here in Chicago whose delectable creations rival anything you’ll find in Paris. Or anywhere else on the planet. Vosges Haut-Chocolat

Perfection does not begin to describe these chocolates. Vosges Haut-Chocolat are made from the finest ingredients offered around the world. The Vosges Haut-Chocolat mission is to create a luxury chocolate experience rooted in a sensory journey of bringing about awareness to indigenous cultures through the exploration of spices, herbs, roots, flowers, fruits, nuts, chocolate and the obscure.

I popped by the Vosges Haut-Chocolat boutique on Armitage Avenue today. Where else would I go for exotic truffles to bring to a gastronomic wine pairings dinner party? I sampled my way around the selections, finally settling on the Rock & Roll (dark chocolate truffles with clove) and a Balsamic and Hazlenut creation that made me weak at the knees. The y was surprisingly tempting – smoky yet subtle. Not at all what I expected.

If you’re lucky enough to live in or visit a city that includes a Vosges Haut-Chocolat boutique, I strongly suggest you stop by and check it out for yourself. If not, you can shop online and sometimes find Vosges Haut-Chocolat at your local Whole Foods or other luxury food purveyor.

Yes, it’s true. Your hair needs protection from the harmful effects of the sun – especially if you have color treated or permed hair. My hair is what can only be described as ‘extremely color treated’ and has been for nearly 20 years now. It’s always been susceptible to bleaching and fading with sun exposure but over the years my hair has become increasingly sensitive and my color can do some crazy things. I’ve experimented with a lot of sun protection for hair and hands down, my top choice is PHYTO PLAGE Protective Sun Veil.

This oil-free styling and protective veil forms an invisible screen that protects the hair from the damaging drying effects of the sun, salt and chlorine. Provides a U.V. filter. Sunflower extract – a photo protective agent with anti-free-radical action – provides a protective filter for the hair fiber. White Lotus extract maintains moisture levels in the hair. Sweet illipe butter, with emollient and hydrating properties, nourishes the hair and restores its suppleness. If you normally use any sort of sculpting gel (or what I like to call ‘messy hair’ creme) then you’ll love this product – it provides terrific shine and a nice sculpting effect.

Dansko Still Delights Me!

When I think of most of the things I wore in high school and college, I cringe. But not my Dansko shoes. I’m a lifelong fan. They’re an essential part of my wardrobe. In fact, I’m pretty sure that once I got my first pair some 30 years ago, there has never been a time that there wasn’t at least one pair of Dansko’s near the front door, along with another pair or two in the closet.

Not Just Shopping

My recent globetrotting was not just about shopping. I spent a fair amount of time working on a project related to my ‘day job’. And it was a good thing, too. Everything was SO expensive. With the EURO reaching an all time high against the dollar, it was just way too expensive to do that much extremely high end shopping. Truth be told, a Louis Vuitton purse or Hermes scarf is now more expensive in Paris than it is in New York. When I lived in Paris the Euro was at an all time low of about 85 cents. Now it’s nearly $1.60 – that means that prices have just about DOUBLED! But I had plenty of time to eat. And I indulged myself in some incredible tasty treats. Including chocolate. Lots of chocolate.

During my 5 day stop in Paris I sampled chocolates at boutique chocolatiers on the Ile Saint Louis and in the Marais. I nibbled tasty treats from big name artisan chocolatiers, too. And (drumroll, please…..) my pick for the best chocolates in Paris….. RICHART Gourmet French Chocolate.

In Praise of Cashmere Boutique

A couple of weeks ago, I wrote a post about bargain cashmere shopping at Cashmere Boutique (Dreamy-Little-Cashmere-Accessories) The deals were SO fabulous that I just had to do a bit of shopping for myself.

I ordered a black cashmere v-neck ribbed pull over, a pair of black cashmere cable knit socks (on sale for only $33!) and a burgundy v-neck ribbed cardigan. The cardigan was out of stock. I knew that when I placed my order, but I liked it so much and the price was so great that I figured it would be worth the wait. Yesterday, I received an e-mail from Cashmere Boutique informing me that they would no longer be carrying that particular sweater but that they did have one in the same color (and for the same $99 price) with a slightly different neckline. The e-mail included a picture of the potential replacement and a quick link to add that item to my prior order with one click. The sweater was cute, but I wasn’t exactly sure I liked the round neck so I decided to think about it for a while. Today I came home to a message on my voice mail. I real live person from Cashmere Boutique called me to make sure I had gotten the e-mail and to apologize for being unable to fill my backorder. She left me a phone number and her direct extension and assured my that were I to need this item quickly for a gift (after all, Hanukkah is less than a week away) that my replacement cardigan would be express shipped at no charge to me. Unfortunately, personal service like this is pretty uncommon these days – especially when you’re bargain hunting. I could not possibly be happier with my shopping experience. The sweater and socks that I did receive were absolutely terrific and of a much higher quality than I expected, particularly for the price. I’m a bit of a Georg Jensen freak. I’ll admit it. I am a huge fan of their minimalist silver jewelry, especially pieces from legendary modern designers like Torun and Ditzel. I also love their serving pieces. And the watches. And the classic jewelry designs like the grape leaves. Georg Jensen silver, like everything else, has gotten quite expensive. Here’s one of my best savvy shopping secrets. True confession: I buy my Georg Jensen through eBay. I order from the Skov Larsen eBay Store.

They are located in Denmark and are an authorized retailer of Georg Jensen. At any given time they have as many as a couple of hundred pieces of Jensen jewelry for sale. Some are posted for auction. Others are ‘buy it now’. Depending on the piece, you can save between 20% to 40%, sometimes more. They also generally have a nice selection of vintage pieces. If you’re looking for a specific piece, drop them an e-mail. They’ve had things I wanted in stock even though they had not yet posted them into their eBay store. They have no other website. When it comes to jeans, I’m a 7 for all Mankind fan. The fit is unbelievably flattering. The styles are diverse so that all my jeans look different and I don’t feel (or look) like I’m wearing the same thing every single day. My most recent acquisition was a pair of wider legged trouser cut jeans. The cut is a bit dressier so they work beautifully with pieces that don’t always look good with low rise jeans. I’ve been wearing mine with an empire waist blouse and shrunken blazer and have gotten tons of compliments. Fabulous with heels!
