And Speaking of Apples

Posted in American Regional Products, Edible Gifts, Fruit, Gift Baskets, Gourmet Shopping, Groceries, Hard to Find Items at 6:16 am by Deb Savvy

I’m here in the heart of apple country – Oregon.  I attended a harvest market last week and tomorrow I plan on going again.  They’re famous for a lot more than the apples here, of course, but it was the apples that really rocked my world.

There must have been at least 30 varieties of local apples from which to choose.  Loads of ’boutique’ varieties from local growers.  And lots of free samples!  The tasting almost made it harder to choose, but since I knew I’d be able to go back again, I felt a little less pressure.  My current favorite is the Hidden Rose – a small apple with light green skin, pink fruit and a sweet yet tangy taste.  Like a Grannie Smith with honey.  YUM! And it didn’t stop at apples. That was just the beginning! There were pears galore. Local wines. Smoked salmon. And lots more.

And Speaking of Excellent Customer Service

Posted in Phones, Tech Stuff at 5:02 am by Deb Savvy

Believe it or not, my laptop was not the only thing that crashed before I left for my big journey.  The day before that happened, my iPhone developed a weird problem.  The little switch on the side that turns the ringer on and off suddenly got loose in its little housing and stopped working.  A major problem, as far as I’m concerned.  I need to be able to use my phone silently.  Anyway, I made an appointment and stopped in for a little visit at the Apple Store Genius Bar.

Apple Store

Overall, I have to say it was one of the most positive technical failure experiences I’ve ever had.  Especially with the phone.  Since the switch was the only thing that wasn’t working, I synched and backed up my phone and iTunes before heading over to the Apple Store .  I arrived about 10 minutes early as the suggest and much to my surprise there was a Genius ready to help me right then.  Within a couple of minutes he quickly verified the problem, decided that the phone needed to be replaced and confirmed that this would all be covered for free as part of the Apple Care package I purchased for my phone.  The replacement phone is exactly the same as the phone I had and my original Apple Care support is still valid for the balance of that contract (over a year) so if I have another problem, I’m still covered.  I was out the door in less than 15 minutes with a phone that worked.  Once I got home I plugged the replacement phone into the computer – a message flashed on the screen asking if this was a replacement iPhone or an additional iPhone to be activated.  One click later all of my contacts, music, calendars, text messages and e-mails were restored to the new phone – it was miraculous.  I never expected to old text messages to be restored.  And it only took about 5 minutes!

These days it’s all too rare to have a truly positive customer service experience -especially when it comes to a mobile phone.  Kudos to Apple Store

Apple Store

I’ve loved my iPhone ever since the day I took it out of the box, but I’m an even bigger fan now.

And As Seen in Santa Monica

Posted in Accessories, Back Packs, Backpacks, Briefcases, Gifts for Travelers, Luggage, Purses and Bags at 7:06 pm by Deb Savvy

I saw this bag on one of those totally beautiful effortlessly chic blonde Southern California nightmares.  The kind of woman you absolutely want to hate because she’s so hot yet you can’t because she’s so nice and so cool.  The bag made as much of an impression as she did.  It was a label I was not familiar with and I assumed it would cost an arm and a leg.

Victorinox Ground Force Marshall Shoulder Tote

Victorinox Ground Force Marshall Shoulder Tote

Was I ever wrong!  This totally perfect shoulder bag is actually an original Swiss Army design from their Victorinox collection.  And quite a good buy, too.

I found it at Luggage Pros for only $89.  Can you believe it?  No, neither could I.  I thought it would be at least as expensive as Tumi!

And it doesn’t stop with ultra practical and adorable purses, either.  The Victorinox line includes briefcases, backpacks, laptop sleeves, garment bags and rolling luggage, tons of ultra practical travel accessories, cosmetic cases and more.  Each piece includes and ingenious selection of pockets and compartments, including the signature Swiss Army pocket on the front.  Perfect for those ‘quick access’ essentials like your cell phone, keys and, of course, Swiss Army knife!

Explore the Victorinox collection at Luggage Pros .

And, of course, we’ve always got the inside scoop on how to get the best possible deal!

As Seen in the O.C.

Posted in Beach and Pool, Designer Womenswear, Dresses, Organics, Style Watch, Womenswear at 6:51 am by Deb Savvy

The recent SoCal leg of my travels included several days in the O.C.  That’s Orange County to most of us.  One of the things I saw a lot of there was the Gypsy 05 Organic Cotton Dress.

I saw it during the day.  I saw it at night.  I saw it in black and white.  I saw it in bright colors.  I saw it in muted jewel tones.  I saw it long.  I saw it short.  I saw it on tiny little skinny chicks.  I saw it on big girls.  And it look good where ever I saw it.  In fact – it looked so good that just about every time I saw it, I wished I was the girl wearing the dress.

Just about the entire line of these wonderful organic cotton dreamy dresses is available – in stock and ready to ship – at Singer22.com.  Prices range from under $100 to about $115 – depending on the length and fabric.  Even at its most expensive this dress is a stylish basic that’s perfect for rounding out that warmer weather wardrobe.

Making the Most of those Hours on the Road

Posted in Books, Great Ideas, Shopping Tips, Travel at 6:21 am by Deb Savvy

My recent travels included a long weekend in Southern California and we all know what that means.  Hours and hours and hours on the freeway.  Way too many hours.  LAX.  Palm Springs.  Joshua Tree.  Beverly Hills.  Orange County.  Santa Monica.  San Diego.  Lots of road time.  I don’t know how people do it every day!

I did everything I could to make the most of those long hours.   And it reallly wasn’t that hard.  There were frequent stops at Starbucks, of course.  But it was the wonderful reading material that really made it easy.  And fun.

Apple iTunes

A couple clicks of the mouse and I had all the reading material I needed to make the hours on the road fly by!  And best of all with downloadable audiobooks from iTunes, I had no added baggage and nothing to forget or leave behind in the hotel room or rental car. Instead of dreading each leg of my journey, I actually found myself looking forward to hopping back in the car so that I could get back to my vacation reading!

Love that!

Downloadable audiobooks would also be a great idea for a long flight or anyone who commutes daily by bus or train.

As Seen at Starbucks

Posted in Barware, Coffee, Crystal and Glass, Gifts under $40, Style Watch at 4:46 am by Deb Savvy

I was at Starbucks today.  Well, technically I was also there yesterday.  And most likely the day before.  That’s what happens when I’m on the road.  But feeding my daily habit is not the point of the story.  The point of the story is that I found something pretty cool at x today while I was waiting for my venti iced blended red-eye.

Bodum 3-pc. Chambord Coffee Press Gift Set

The Bodum 3-pc. Chambord Coffee Press Gift Set includes the original 34-oz. version of the Chambord press plus two 12-oz. Pavina double wall glasses for only $39.95. The Bodum Chambord is the original French press, an award winner of the American Culinary Institute’s Gold Medal for two years straight. The Pavina highball glass is the winner of the European iF Design Award. This set consists of two highball glasses, each one with a 12-ounce capacity. Mouth-blown, the highball glasses are double-walled which help insulates hot or cold beverages. With this unique design, your beverage appears to float inside the inner layer of clear glass. The press easily serves four and has all the favorite features: a polished stainless lid and holder, wide black handle and knob that stay cool, and a durable glass carafe. To use, simply spoon-in the ground coffee of your choice, fill with boiling water to the desired level and plunge the press firmly against the grounds. Wait a few minutes then enjoy fresh coffee!

There’s just something about French press coffee.  Fresh,  Delicious.  Just a little bit different.  And it adds a nice touch of ritual when you sit down to a cup of coffee.

Shoe News from the Road

Posted in Boots, Designer Shoes, Men's Shoes, Shoes at 5:26 pm by Deb Savvy

I’ve been on the road again and do I ever have lots of cool shopping news to report!  From NYC to Portland to LA – I’ve been all over the place and I’ve seen it all.  And I’m still on the road – so check this space often over the coming days and weeks, for shopping tips and style news from the road.

Yesterday I was lucky enough to be strolling the Promenade in Stanta Monica.  Next time you’re in the area – check it out.  FAB shopping destination!  Anyway, I visited the bricks and mortar location of Bertini Shoes, one of my long time favorite online shopping sites.  And was I every impressed.  They’ve got the newest style from the brands and designers we all want to wear every day.  A great selection of Tsubo.  Loads of Pliner.  Clarks.  Icon.  Cole Haan.  Frye.

And so much more!  And a really terrific size and color selection, which makes it much more fun to shop.

If you’re shopping for shoes and not heading over to the Promenade, then take a surf over to Bertini Shoes.  It’s the next best thing to being there.

Dazzled and Delighted by Dell

Posted in Computers, Home Office, Tech Stuff, Who We Are at 7:22 pm by Deb Savvy

Sad but true fact:  These days we rarely get to enjoy a truly positive customer service experience when it comes to computer hardware.  Well, today I am here to share an exception to that rule.  Last week I started having some trouble with my Dell laptop.  My screen would start blinking out of the blue.  The touch pad would seem out of touch.  Then it started to freeze and require frequent rebooting.  By Thursday the thing totally went crazy and it became clear that I was in need of some serious customer service.

Well, let me tell you – after a totally reasonable wait of less than 5 minutes, I was connected to a totally helpful Dell™ Home service rep located in Salt Lake City, Utah.  We were on the phone for quite a while as he instructed my on how to run various diagnostic tests and I reported results back to him.  By late afternoon the verdict was in – I needed a new hard drive, mother board and video card!   I wasn’t as frantic as I have been in the past when a computer starts to get all wiggy – after the last time, I’m much better prepared for a tragedy.  I’ve got online data backups and external hard-drive data backups  (live and learn!) plus the laptop in question is not even a year old so I knew that whatever was wrong with it was covered under the warranty.   The one thing that did have me worried was that I knew that I was leaving town on Saturday morning and there just wasn’t much time.   And what happened?  Before I even had a chance to explain my schedule needs, the plan was underway.  The exact parts were being dispatched by overnight courrier to a technician in my area.  The technician was supposed to call me after the parts were received and not later than noon and then COME TO MY HOUSE and perform the repair not later than 2 PM.  And get this – that is exactly what happened.  By 2 in the afternoon, my new best friend Cary the Dell™ Home Tech had replaced all the faulty components and reassembled my laptop to better than new condition.  It’s running better than it did when it was brand new!

Don’t get me wrong, a computer crash is never fun.  At its best, computer crash .  But Dell™ Home made it as pain free is it could possibly have been. The only bummer was that I did have to restore a bunch of my programs and my data –  an annoyance but hardly a tragedy.  They TOTALLY took care of me and FAST.

Other than a few ’special pricing’ items at the larger department stores, there generally is not much in the way of outerwear on sale this early in the season. Things are different this year!
