I did a little bricks and mortar browsing today. Cindy and I had a 3 mile walk this morning and I treated myself to a tad of shopping. This is always a funny time of year to shop - a lot of the summer clearance items have already been picked over more than once and it’s simply too soon to think about fall. I must admit that not much on the racks looked all that cute.
With one exception. The denim collections from Rocawear are smoking hot! Absolutely adorable. Well cut, well styled and just the right amount of added detail. Like I said - SMOKING HOT! Thanks Jay-Z!

An Apt Memorial
Some very dear friends of mine lost their mother this week. Another friend lost her father. I found myself thinking a lot about the things we do for people when they’ve suffered a loss. Some people send flowers; I generally do not. I’m much more likely to drop off a home-cooked meal or to send a cheesecake or carrot cake if they’re too far way for me to actually bring them anything from my own kitchen. It’s how we take care of each other - food really is love.
But it’s also nice to provide them with a lasting memorial - when I lost my father, several friends (and my dentist, believe it or not) had memorial trees planted in his honor. I was truly moved by their thoughtful gesture and thought about those trees this week when I heard the news about my friends’ losses. I’ll plant have trees planted in their honor. A living tree is a wonderful symbol of the circle of life, an eternal memorial, and helps keep our planet greener.
World of Wii
Everybody I know is going Wii crazy these days. And I’ve hopped on the bandwagon. I was lucky enough to be invited to a few Wii marathons with friends and all I can say is Wii Wow! How fun! And what a great way to exercise, too. The Wii Fit is awesome. And the Wii sports. And the games. What a blast.
The weird thing is that you’d think that the infamous Wii Christmas shortage would be over by know - but it’s not. Game console systems can still be hard to find. And so can some of the accessories and games. I’ve been surfing like crazy and cannot report any place (other than eBay) where you can simply order a console that’s in stock and have it shipped right away. This is Too Funny
Last night I cooked dinner for some friends. It sounds like a selfless act but I had an ulterior motive. Their baby, Dude, is now 6 weeks old and I wanted to come over and see the bath-time show! Anyway, I talked my way in with a delicious meal of maple/soy marinated salmon and rice noodles with bok choy and peapods. (Beware of natives bearing gifts, yes?)
Anyway, the salmon is something I’ve made a bunch of times before, but I stressed over it yesterday, not really remembering how much soy sauce relative to how much maple syrup. And then I had a flash thought that maybe I had actually used teriyaki or tamari and not soy sauce at all. It turned out great and we had a wonderful meal and Dude put on a terrific show. Then I nearly fell off my chair in laughter when I got an e-mail this morning that the Barefoot Contessa Pantry maple teriaki sauce was a featured product this month at StonewallKitchen.com
. I don’t think I’ll ever worry about making my own marinade again - not when it comes in one simple package. It’s easier and it’s actually less expensive given the current price of a really good bottle of maple syrup.

I have my pal Peanut to thank for this one. She turned me on to the whole phenomenon of ‘Fizz and Find’ fun. Each contains one of a series of toys but you don’t know which one you’ve got until you ‘fizz’ it.
Like the Dragon Magic Egg - each one has a different collectible dragon inside. Drop the egg in water and watch it fizz away and reveal a secret dragon hidden inside. Each dragon emerges it’s fizzy shell in parts - put them together and you’ve got a new dragon. You can even mix and match parts from more than one dragon to create your own unique mythical creatures. There’s no way to tell from the outside of the package (or the egg) which dragon is inside, which adds to the fun even more.
