Last summer when I was staying with Becky, Peanut, Ketchy and Duncan, the refrigerator started leaking. We narrowed the problem area down to a small plastic tube in the automatic icemaker. We turned the icemaker off and called the Maytag man. Two weeks and three service calls later we were no closer to making ice without a flood. Despite numerous calls to the service and parts departments and the confirmation from all three technicians that the problem was, indeed, the tubing we suspected, we just could not seem to get a technician to show up with the tubing to actually complete the fix. Completely frustrated we did what we always do - we sat down at the computer. We ordered a new tube and installed it ourselves.

I head directly to one of my usual high end bargain hunting grounds. Recent purchases include Versace crystal bottle stoppers (for about $25), fabulous Calvin Klein cake servers (under $20) and some really nice Rosenthal pieces. Inventories turn quickly and it’s far from a tabletop superstore, but the bargains abound. When I find a great deal here I generally stock up on a few extra items to use as hostess and thank you gifts.

Oh the decadence of a jewelry armoire! It’s a great way to add a luxe touch to your bedroom or dressing area and keep things better organized at the same time. I feel like a 40’s film star when I browse my jewelry and accessories. I have this one and it seems like nearly every woman who comes to my house asks about it.

It’s a fabulous piece and exremely solid and well made. The drawers are all lined in black velvet. The side doors open and contain double rows of necklace hooks. I find these hooks to be a handy place to keep funky chain belts too. The top tray has a section for an ample inventory of rings and dividers for other items. The first drawers include dividers too. The larger drawers at the bottom are undivided, which makes them perfect place for silk scarves and pieces that get stored in their own boxes. I got mine at Stacks. It’s crazy how certain movies work their way into the fabric of our everyday lives. I was having dinner with friends recently and at one point in the conversation, Stacey asked the group ‘what was it that Yoda said?’. We all answered in unison ‘do or do not. there is no try.’ Wisdom often comes from unusual sources.
And so does fun, by the way. At their wedding last fall, Michael and Julia posed for pictures while dueling with Star Wars light sabers. It was really cute and the pictures turned out great. For the right people, light sabers could be a terrific gift. It’s just silly enough without being tasteless (to the right people) and certainly memorable.
